Richard Dawkins: ‘Disgraceful’ Most Candidates Are Creationists

Wednesday on “The Alan Colmes Show,” Alan spoke with celebrated scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins about his new book called A Brief Candle In The Dark, which is a compilation of his views and stories about his life.

Dawkins told Alan he thinks it is disgraceful that most of the candidates running for the GOP nomination for President are creationists, even though molecular genetics can prove that evolution is scientific fact. They also discussed whether Dawkins would ever change his views on the existence of God, some of the great minds Dawkins has worked with, and why he gets a positive reaction in the Bible Belt despite his views on religion.

Religion VS Reality

When presented together, the two propositions in this video are obviously silly, yet only one of them is recognized as such. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with how our standards shift when we’re dealing with reality as opposed to dealing with something far more fantastical. Perhaps it also has something to do with having a well established political and social system of norms and traditions backing up and perpetuating one of those silly propositions, often presented to us by loved ones when we were vulnerable children, or emotionally compromised by something.

Why do people accept such silly beliefs, but then live as though they don’t actually believe those things? Perhaps it’s because servitude to a lifetime of running from the whip, whilst chasing the carrot, is too exhausting. I tend to think it’s just not real enough for them, and they’re lying to themselves, a skin-deep lie, because they want it to be true. Maybe they don’t believe as sincerely as their facade makes it seem. After all, if I believed my existence in eternity depends upon what I do in this fleeting instant of a life, then my every waking moment would be devoted to that eternity. Yet that’s not what we see when we look at most believers. We see people standing in line at the bank. We see people sitting in traffic, suffering occasional road rage. We see people not concerned with eternity. We see people concerned with reality.

Dave Allen - Religious Jokes

Irish comedian Dave Allen tells a series of religious jokes.

Every Sperm is Sacred - Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Every Sperm is Sacred scene, taken from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Terry Jones picked this as part of his Top 10 Monty Python Movie Moments for Esquire Magazine -

"There were about 60 kids and, even though some of the dialogue in this scene was considered a bit racy at the time, the parents were all happy to have their children take part. We did have Michael say, 'If only the Roman Catholic Church would let me wear a little rubber thing on the end of my sock,' though, and we dubbed it later. It's a long sequence, but I think it's one of my favorite bits of Python."

Oregon Court Upholds Convictions of Couple Who Sought 'Faith Healing' Instead of Doctor for Baby

The Oregon Supreme Court has upheld the 2011 manslaughter convictions of a faith-healing couple whose premature baby died after a homebirth when they didn’t seek medical treatment. Dale and Shannon Hickman are members of the Followers of Christ church in Oregon City, which the state said has a long history of children dying from preventable conditions because their parents refused them medical care.

The Hickmans, now both 30 years old, were convicted in 2011. A trial found that when Shannon went into labor two months early in 2009, the couple traveled to her mother’s house instead of a hospital. David Hickman was born weighing three pounds, seven ounces, and lived for less than nine hours. Courthouse News reports those convictions were upheld Thursday after several appeals.

Full Program below

BBC Three 08 October 2012
Comedian Andrew Maxwell takes five British creationists to the west coast of America to try to convince them that evolution rather than creationism explains how we all got here. Stuck on a bus across 2,000 miles of dustbowl roads with these passionate believers, Maxwell tackles some firmly held beliefs - could the Earth be only 6,000 years old, and did humans and T-Rex really live side by side? It's a bumpy ride as he's confronted with some lively debates along the way, but by the end could he possibly win over any of these believers with what he regards as hard scientific fact?
